When the Carr Fire swept through our area in 2018 it took the homes of many in our area, including people we know and love. Many were left with no possessions and a LOT of work ahead of them. That's when the chainsaws came out. Many people in a ward in our Redding Stake got out their chainsaws and had a "party" to cut down all the dead trees left in the yards of people in our church. Some neighbors not of our faith who lived nearby (and who had ALSO lost their house) came to help. Then the members of the ward offered to schedule another "chainsaw party" to cut down the neighbors trees. Overwhelmed with love, these neighbors asked themselves "why are these strangers so willing to openly help us?" They became interested in the church, were later baptized and are now a wonderful addition to our stake. It was the charity they observed and received that softened their hearts and opened them to receive the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Anne C. Pingree in the General Relief Society Meeting in 2002 said,
"It matters not whether we are new converts or lifelong members; single, married, divorced, or widowed; whether we’re rich, poor, educated, or uneducated; living in a modern city or in the most remote jungle village. We, as covenant (people), have consecrated ourselves to the cause of Christ through our baptismal and temple covenants. We can alter the face of the earth one family" (and might I add one person) "and one home at a time through charity, our small and simple acts of pure love."
As we look to gather Israel in these trying times, we can use the seemingly troubling events and (even during not so troubling times) to exercise the charity within each of us, to serve those of our community with all the intent of our hearts, that when He comes again we will already be "knit together in unity and in love one towards another." (Mosiah 18:21)
May we all stop, observe, ask in prayer and then listen to the spirit to find ways to serve those in need in our community, regularly, is my prayer.

Algunos vecinos que no eran de nuestra fe y que vivían cerca (y que TAMBIÉN habían perdido su casa) vinieron a ayudar. Luego, los miembros del barrio se ofrecieron a programar otra "fiesta de motosierras" para talar los árboles vecinos. Abrumados por el amor, estos vecinos se preguntaron "¿por qué estos extraños están tan dispuestos a ayudarnos abiertamente?" Se interesaron en la iglesia, luego se bautizaron y ahora son una maravillosa adición a nuestra estaca. Que todos nos detengamos, observemos, pidamos en oración y luego escuchemos el espíritu para encontrar formas de servir a los necesitados en nuestra comunidad, regularmente, es mi oración.
