Stones to Shine in Darkness
What a wonderful feast of gospel knowledge and instruction we received at General Conference last week! As we go back and re-listen to messages given, I would like to share a thought that might help us make more out of the experience. I remember Brother Doug McMullin sharing this once and I have never forgotten it. It comes from the Book of Ether in The Book of Mormon. Specifically, it’s chapter 6, verse 3. It makes reference to one of my favorite moments in The Book of Mormon, when the Brother of Jared comes to the Lord asking for light on their journey to the promised land. You may remember that the Lord “stretched forth His hand” and touched the stones that the Brother of Jared had prepared “one by one”, illuminating them as the Brother of Jared had so faithfully asked Him to do. Here’s the verse:
“And thus the Lord caused stones to shine in darkness, to give light unto men, women, and children, that they might not cross the great waters in darkness.”
Let’s liken this scripture to ourselves right now. With all that is going on around us and inside us, we can feel much like the Brother of Jared and his people felt. We may feel like we are on a perilous journey in uncharted waters with our promised destination nowhere in sight. Now, let’s feel the spirit of that verse and lift up our eyes to see General Conference in the context of Ether 6:3.
Brothers and sisters, we are all children of God and He loves us. He loves us so much that He sent His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ to perform the infinite atoning sacrifice to save us from the grave and from our sins. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ know our struggles and their hands are in all things. As we re-listen intently to the messages of General Conference, I promise that we will feel light and direction custom fit for our lives right now. Our families will feel this light, like stones shining in darkness, and we will then be able to continue steadfastly on our own journeys with renewed faith and hope.

Piedras para brillar en la oscuridad
¡Qué maravillosa fiesta de conocimiento e instrucción del Evangelio recibimos en la Conferencia General hace un par de semanas! A medida que retrocedemos y volvemos a escuchar los mensajes dados, me gustaría compartir un pensamiento que podría ayudarnos a aprovechar mejor la experiencia. Recuerdo que el hermano Doug McMullin compartió esto una vez y nunca lo he olvidado. Viene del Libro de Éter en El Libro de Mormón. Específicamente, es el capítulo 6, versículo 3. Hace referencia a uno de mis momentos favoritos en El Libro de Mormón, cuando el hermano de Jared se acerca al Señor pidiendo luz en su viaje a la tierra prometida. Tal vez recuerdes que el Señor “extendió Su mano” y tocó las piedras que el hermano de Jared había preparado “una por una”, iluminándolas como el hermano de Jared le había pedido tan fielmente que lo hiciera. Aquí está el verso:
“Y así el Señor hizo que las piedras brillaran en las tinieblas, para alumbrar a los hombres, mujeres y niños, a fin de que no cruzaran las grandes aguas en las tinieblas”.
Comparemos esta escritura con nosotros mismos ahora mismo. Con todo lo que está sucediendo a nuestro alrededor y dentro de nosotros, podemos sentirnos como el hermano de Jared y su gente. Podemos sentir que estamos en un viaje peligroso en aguas inexploradas sin nuestro destino prometido a la vista. Ahora, sintamos el espíritu de ese versículo y alcemos nuestros ojos para ver Conferencia General en el contexto de Éter 6: 3.
Hermanos y hermanas, todos somos hijos de Dios y Él nos ama. Él nos ama tanto que envió a Su Hijo Unigénito, Jesucristo, para realizar el sacrificio expiatorio infinito para salvarnos de la tumba y de nuestros pecados. Nuestro Padre Celestial y Jesucristo saben nuestras luchas y sus manos están en todas las cosas. Mientras volvemos a escuchar atentamente los mensajes de la Conferencia General, prometo que sentiremos la luz y la dirección adecuadas para nuestras vidas en este momento. Nuestras familias sentirán esta luz, como piedras que brillan en la oscuridad, y entonces podremos continuar con firmeza en nuestros propios viajes con fe y esperanza renovadas.
