I had an experience several weeks ago that has had me thinking. My mom, who is 80 and lives in Florida, became very ill and was admitted to the hospital. When she was first admitted, I thought “I’ll go to Florida in a few weeks”. The next day, while at work, I felt an overwhelming urgency to be with my mom and to help my dad while Mom was in the hospital. The urgency was so pressing that I couldn’t work. All I could think about were my parents. So, I went to my very understanding boss, who knew what was going on with my mom, and told her I needed to go and be with my parents. I left work at 10:30am and was on the road to the Sacramento airport at 1:30pm that same day. The urgency I felt to be with my parents was so strong that I acted immediately.
I have reflected on how powerful the urgency had felt and have pondered the question “Do I feel some of that same urgency to follow our prophet? To heed his many invitations to live a higher and holier life?”
To refresh my memory of these many invitations, I reviewed some of President Nelson’s talks since he became the prophet. Allow me to refresh your memory also.
President Nelson has invited, pleaded with, and urged us to do the following: give the Lord a fair share of our time daily; experience the joy of daily repentance; think deeply and often about the question “How do I hear Him?”; seek to truly hear His Son; make constant and consistent efforts to fill our daily lives with His words, His teachings, His truths; help gather Israel; let God prevail; let Him be the strongest and most powerful influence in our life; lead out in abandoning attitudes and actions of prejudice; increase our faith to move the mountains in our lives; study and become an “engaged learner”; choose to believe in Jesus Christ; implement extraordinary measures to strengthen our personal spiritual foundations; take the necessary steps to receive life-changing ordinances; seek to understand temple covenants and ordinances prayerfully and consistently; seek miracles in faith and prayerfully ask God to help us exercise that kind of faith; expect miracles; end conflict in our personal lives; restore the correct name of the Lord’s church – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; learn to discern and understand the promptings of the Holy Ghost; choose to do the spiritual work required to enjoy the gift of the Holy Ghost; stretch beyond our current spiritual ability to receive personal revelation; pour out our hearts to our Heavenly Father; pray in the name of Jesus Christ about “your concerns, your fears, your weaknesses-yes, the very longings of your heart. And then listen!”; come unto Christ.
I have chosen one of these invitations and, for the next week, I will try to make it the focus of my thoughts, my prayers, my studies, and my actions, remembering that “all these things are done in wisdom and order; for it is not required that a man should run faster than he has strength.” Care to join me?
We have a prophet on the earth today. He is a man of God, of this there is no doubt. He loves and cares for us. I know there is “safety for the soul” and deep joy available to us when we hearken to and heed the voice of the prophet.

"Es urgente..."
Tuve una experiencia hace varias semanas que me ha dejado pensando. Mi mamá, que tiene 80 años y vive en Florida, se enfermó gravemente y fue internada en el hospital. Cuando la admitieron por primera vez, pensé: “Me iré a Florida en unas semanas”. Al día siguiente, mientras estaba en el trabajo, sentí una urgencia abrumadora de estar con mi mamá y ayudar a mi papá mientras mamá estaba en el hospital. La urgencia era tan apremiante que no podía trabajar. Todo en lo que podía pensar era en mis padres. Así que acudí a mi muy comprensiva jefa, que sabía lo que estaba pasando con mi madre, y le dije que tenía que irme y estar con mis padres. Salí del trabajo a las 10:30 am y estaba camino al aeropuerto de Sacramento a la 1:30 pm ese mismo día. La urgencia que sentí por estar con mis padres fue tan fuerte que actué de inmediato.
Reflexioné sobre cuán poderosa había sido la urgencia y me planteé la pregunta: “¿Siento algo de esa misma urgencia de seguir a nuestro profeta? ¿Para prestar atención a sus muchas invitaciones para vivir una vida más elevada y más santa?
Para refrescar mi memoria de estas muchas invitaciones, repasé algunos de los discursos del presidente Nelson desde que se convirtió en profeta. Permítanme refrescar su memoria también.

Tenemos un profeta en la tierra hoy. Es un hombre de Dios, de eso no hay duda. Él nos ama y nos cuida. Sé que hay “seguridad para el alma” y un profundo gozo disponible para nosotros cuando escuchamos y prestamos atención a la voz del profeta.
