The perfect, divine expression of fatherhood is our Heavenly Father. His character and attributes include abundant goodness and perfect love. His work and glory are the development, happiness, and eternal life of His children. Fathers in this fallen world can claim nothing comparable to the Majesty on High, but at their best, they are striving to emulate Him, and they indeed labor in His work. They are honored with a remarkable and sobering trust.
For men, fatherhood exposes us to our own weaknesses and our need to improve. Fatherhood requires sacrifice, but it is a source of incomparable satisfaction, even joy. Again, the ultimate model is our Heavenly Father, who so loved us, His spirit children, that He gave us His Only Begotten Son for our salvation and exaltation. Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Fathers manifest that love as they lay down their lives day by day, laboring in the service and support of their families.
Perhaps the most essential of a father’s work is to turn the hearts of his children to their Heavenly Father. If by his example as well as his words a father can demonstrate what fidelity to God looks like in day-to-day living, that father will have given his children the key to peace in this life and eternal life in the world to come. A father who reads scripture to and with his children acquaints them with the voice of the Lord."

La expresión perfecta y divina de la paternidad es nuestro Padre Celestial. Su carácter y atributos incluyen bondad abundante y amor perfecto. Su obra y gloria son el desarrollo, la felicidad y la vida eterna de Sus hijos. Los padres en este mundo caído no pueden reclamar nada comparable a la Majestad en lo Alto, pero en su mejor momento, se esfuerzan por emularlo, y de hecho trabajan en Su obra. Son honrados con una confianza notable y aleccionadora.
Para los hombres, la paternidad nos expone a nuestras propias debilidades y nuestra necesidad de mejorar. La paternidad exige sacrificio, pero es fuente de incomparable satisfacción, incluso de alegría. Una vez más, el modelo supremo es nuestro Padre Celestial, quien nos amó tanto a nosotros, Sus hijos espirituales, que nos dio a Su Hijo Unigénito para nuestra salvación y exaltación. Jesús dijo: “Nadie tiene mayor amor que este, que uno ponga su vida por sus amigos”. Los padres manifiestan ese amor al dar su vida día a día, trabajando en el servicio y sostén de sus familias.
Quizás lo más esencial de la obra de un padre es volver el corazón de sus hijos a su Padre Celestial. Si tanto con su ejemplo como con sus palabras un padre puede demostrar cómo es la fidelidad a Dios en la vida cotidiana, ese padre habrá dado a sus hijos la clave para la paz en esta vida y la vida eterna en el mundo venidero. Un padre que lee las Escrituras a sus hijos y con ellos los familiariza con la voz del Señor."
